History of the Shop

Hugh Macpherson Hugh Macpherson

FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS SINCE 1946

In spite of post war difficulties,  the founder of our Company, Hugh Macpherson could not resist the call to return to his birthplace. Canada had been home for some years, but he brought his  Falkirk born wife Janet, and his two young daughters back home to Scotland to open up a Highland Outfitting and Kiltmaking shop. Our Kilts are still proudly worn by generations of customers from all over the world.

Son of a Sutherland Crofter, Hugh was a young lad when he was taken reluctantly overseas to Canada. At a Burns Supper in Canada, he met his future bride and they decided that the day they could afford to return to Scotland they would.  So, as successful Importers of Scottish items, members of a thriving Scottish community and Pipe Major of the St.Catherine’s Pipe Band in Ontario they left North America. Started the business in Scotland and, as they say, the rest is history!

Hugh’s hobbies were all things Scottish. He was one of the founders of the Clan Macpherson Association and Chairman from 1957 to 1960, also President of the Scottish Pipe Band Association from 1953-61 and took a pride living in Edinburgh by becoming a Councillor and then Senior Baillie as well as an Elder of Cramond Kirk As he was on the committee for the planning of the Forth Road Bridge, his name is engraved on the Commemoration Stone. A kilt wearer all his adult life, Hugh travelled extensively in the United States and Canada and was truly a kilted ambassador for his country. Hugh also designed and produced the Edinburgh tartan.
